San Jose State University makes a change

PTW has learned that San Jose State Athletic Director Gene Bleimeyer has dismissed Coach George Nessman and his staff, effective immediately. Who will act as an interim coach is unknown at this point.

*** Just added @ 7:20 p.m. -- A person in SJSU athletics denies any changes have taken place at this point.

*** Just added @ 9:00 p.m. 2/19 -- A second source says the SJSU coaching staff will finish out the season (please do note that change) but has been informed they will be let go at season's end. The last official SJSU athletics offering states this is not true, that no decision has been made.

A note for those posting comments: two words - IP addresses

*** Just added 1:30 p.m. 2/20 --  My use of the words "effective immediately" appears incorrect. That error is regretted. PTW still stands behind writing that the decision on the present coaching staff has been made and expressed by AD Bleimeyer to the parties involved.

All feedback is appreciated, positive, negative or neutral.

Coach Nessman and his staff have done a terrific job cleaning up an inherited horrific APR mess and also in not committing any NCAA infractions. That cannot be argued. But coaching tenures in D-I athletics are predicated, barring inappropriate personal behavior, on winning more games than losing, sometimes many more. This certainly isn't an all-inclusive measuring device and it can be argued not a fair one but it is what all know and acknowledge to be the overarching factor.

*** Just added 9:30 a.m. 2/22 -- PTW now has a third individual affiliated with San Jose State University confirming that the decision not to retain the present men's basketball coaching staff has been made and expressed by AD Gene Bleimeyer to the parties involved. The staff's tenure will conclude at season's end.

Next time, wait until there's an official announcement made. This way you won't look ridiculous, like you do now. Thank you.

One can only hope you are correct...we've put up with Nessman and his inadequacies far too long

What an idiot. Get some facts before you post.

Thank you for putting careers on the line as well as jeopardizing families of those who have those careers which put food on the table. Your research into unnamed sources with zero corroboration from an actual named source from the university is atrocious reporting. You should be ashamed of your behavior. Seeing as though all anonymous quotes are viwed with legitimacy on this site, I will remain anonymous as well.

You're the master of the obvious. Every SJSU fan knew that this was Nessman's last season as Head Coach. And for you to "try to break a story" and then back track makes YOU look ridiculous. Stop pretending to be a journalist and go back to your day job, if you have one? This is more proof that if you want the truth, stay away from blogs people. Go Spartans!

Whereas it appears as though PTW has wrongly claimed that Nessman and his staff have been relieved of their duties, I want to go on record as saying the new AD needs to take a very hard look at the dismal track record of coach Nessman and make the changes that are absolutely necessary. He hasn't recruited well at all and he doesn't develop players. What does this lead to...a losing record season after season. The fact that no one is showing up for the games also needs to change. Nessman has done nothing to encourage student attendance at home games. Opposing teams that come into the Event Center have to be laughing at the crowds we get. It's embarrassing and wrong. Let Nessman and his staff finish out this horrendous season then fire him as soon as this painful season is over. We've all put up with this too long already! Let's get a coach in here that can recruit and coachILVuadi talent so we don't continue to be a laughing stock when we enter the Mountain West next year!

Anyone who has been paying attention to college hoops lately would know that Nessman has been hanging on to his job primariily because of his friendship with the prior AD, Tom Bowen - a friendship which goes all the way back to their days at De La Salle HS in Concord. Once Bowen moved on to Memphis, Nessman's days were numbered. About the only reason why Nessman was allowed to go forward this season was because when Mean Gene took over as AD, it was too late in the cycle to replace the coach.

The only matter of curiosity remaining for this season is whether or not Nessman posts another 20-loss season. If that happens, then he will have lost 20 games for four out of his eight seasons at the helm - with another 19-loss season sprinkled in as well.

Incompetence does not fairly describe Nessman's tenure in San Jose. Futility does not do it justice. The only word that comes to mind when it comes to George Nessman is theft - theft of eight years' worth of good money thrown away on a bad coach, theft of the potential of some great kids who were decent hoop players and decided to come to SJSU and tried to make the best of it despite Nessman's obvious faults, theft of energy and enthusiasm for SJSU basketball because of his ineptitude.

After this season, George Nessman will be but a bad footnote in college basketball history, doomed to live the remainder of his life knowing he is one of the worst basketball coaches in modern NCAA history.

Good riddance.
