Mark Ziegler @ the Sign On San Diego site has a feature on DeShawn Stephens' change of mind but an explanation regarding the switch still remains missing.

It's obvious that Stevens isn't who they (USU and the pundits)thought he was. Once he heard the Antelope Valley College sophomore Kyisean Reed had given a verbal -and I mean, like instantly - he quickly figured that his playing time would be limited and he ran like a scared chicken without a head. Hope they meet in the SoCal Juco playoffs this year. Kyisean will display his offensive repertoire notwithstanding a meeting and awe fans with mindboggling dunks and blocks as well as displaying supreme athleticism. He is by far the best Juco player in the entire Nation.
His name is Deshawn "Stephens" frist. Their game should be a highly anticipated match up if Kyisean is as promising as they say. Deshawn Stephens could surely use more rivals to challenge him to further hone his talents and athletic prowess past NBA status. He's been playing ball for fun since 4yrs old, and only at the end of High School has he begun to play competitively. Kyisean would be a good test challenge of his progress since last semester at SMC, and a hot topic when their game finally comes around. Could be a SDSU vs. USU rivalry in the works!

Looks even more promising this semester (Videos coming soon!)
No disrespect to any young man trying to better themselves through sports and education, but I would like someone to explain why Deshawn decommitted from USU. I think it's fantastic that he has an opportunity to play somewhere at the D1 level. But, I was always raised with the understanding that your WORD is your BOND. I guess some people didn't get the same message. It's ok, I understand the dynamics of verbals in the D1 college basketball game. It has to be disappointing to USU coaches and fans when one considers that they put this guy on Radio up there and treated him like royalty. A week later, like a betrothed who's swayed by a call girl, he's gone. What Stevens doesn't understand is what he can't yet know...that Kyisean Reed, although a superior athlete with a solid jump shot who could easily average a double-double on any level, is as unselfish a player as there's ever been. He likes passing to the open man and doesn't look to hog the spotlight...he doesn't have to, it just comes naturally. We all make choices in life and eventually have to come to a reckoning, Stevens will soon know that not playing at USU - and potentially along side Kyisean Reed and under the guidance of Coach Stew Morrill: A coach that Jerry Sloan of the Utah Jazz called the best coach in college basketball - just might be the biggest mistake of his basketball career up to now.
If you think leaving for SDSU instead of Utah State is a mistake you might want to check out the coach he will be taught by and the caliber of team and conference he is heading to. SDSU is the best basketball program in the West right now. If you haven't figured that out yet, you need to wake up. He is going to a better program with better opportunities when their 3 starting seniors leave. He fits the mold of a Billy White and will join one of this year's Naismith nominees in Leonard. Never heard of Kyisean and if he was good enough he would have been on SDSU's radar.
Truth b told, Checked out the coach he will be coached by (meaning Steve Fisher); well I did. Fisher was fired from Michigan over the Ed Martin scandal...better do some homework. As of now, Fisher has a 10-0 record vs. the Sisters of Mercy and Gonzaga. Tonight, SDSU is struggling against Cal Poly. So someone really needs to wake up and stop believeing the hype. When the seniors leave, the Aztecs will be just another run of the mill mid-major, Stephens notwithstanding. I've seen both Stevens and Reed play, at this point in their young careers, I'd take Reed over Stephens every day of the week and twice on Sunday. It's not even close.
Truth b told, perhaps you should look at the facts. SDSU is now #6 in the nation, and Gonzaga, Cal, Utah, St. Mary's, and Wichita St. (1st 3 being away games) are not quite the Sisters of Mercy and are harder than many non-conf. schedules among the Top 25. With respect to the Fisher getting fired issue, he has tremendous integrity, as evidenced by 12 years at SDSU with an untarnished record, and there has never been any connection to him and a misguided booster he had no knowledge of. He was a Michigan scapegoat, and they have never done squat since he left. I think it is you who needs to do your homework.
