LAS CRUCES — It's been an up-and-down summer for Justin Hawkins, but somehow the former New Mexico State University swingman has kept a level head and is still on track to pursuing an NBA career.
Hawkins returned to his native California after the Aggies' triple overtime loss to Boise State in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament final. He began training for the invite-only Portsmouth Invitational, but it turned out he was also able to spend some time with his father, who was fighting illness.
Hawkins' father passed away soon after, but the former Aggie said his dad would have wanted him to continue playing the game.
"I went to my dad's funeral on a Tuesday, and then had to leave (for Los Angeles) that night," Hawkins said on Wednesday. "I didn't get to Portsmouth until 10 a.m. on Wednesday and then it was nonstop. I didn't play that well in our first game, but the next two days, I played great." ... Go here for the remainder, including some news on Fred Peete.
