Friday's WAC game reports, links and notes

Paul George, still feeling the effects of a bad ankle sprain, demonstrated last night that the NBA may not be big enough for him.

Conversely, who were those guys wearing Aggie uniforms? 64 points? Incredibly, 9-26 from the foul line? Wow! Did Fresno State have a Bulldog version of Bill Sproat?

So much for not being 100%.

After missing four games because of a severely sprained ankle, Fresno State forward Paul George scored a career-high 30 points and led his team to an 83-64 Western Athletic Conference win over first-place New Mexico State at the Save Mart Center on Thursday night.

George was tentative at the start but scored 11 first-half points to ignite his team. He hit 5 of 13 3-pointers in the game and ran well in transition.

"I don't think we expected Paul to come out here and have 30," said Fresno State coach Steve Cleveland. "I'm not sure he expected that either. But it's good to have him back..."

Down by 16 points to first-place Utah State with 10:51 left, Boise State men's basketball coach Greg Graham called for his last-place team to start pressing.

And the Broncos' hectic, all-out full-court pressure nearly delivered what would have been the upset of the year in the WAC.

Boise State twice pulled within two points in the final 20 seconds, but couldn't quite catch the Aggies in a 72-67 loss Thursday in front of 3,064 fans at Taco Bell Arena...

New Mexico State got off to a 9-0 start and had to fight off a late run in an 84-68 victory over North Carolina A&T on Thursday at the Pan American Center.

NMSU led by 20 with 15:26 left to play, but A&T started to heat up from long range in the second half. A&T hit 7-of-22 (31.8 percent) from long range in the second half to pull to within five with 8:45 to play.

"They are the kind of team that if they make 3s, they can be scary," said Aggies coach Marvin Menzies, whose team improved to 2-3 on the season.

After a 20-percent performance from long range in a loss at Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, the Aggies were slightly better, hitting 10-of-30 from beyond the arc on Thursday. Unlike that game, however, the Aggies closed A&T out rather than getting caught in a 3-point contest...
