No Birch but...

New Mexico State did not land Khem Birch but hasn't gone emptyhanded.

First, here is the Birch story.

Then, Jason Groves has a possible Aggie personnel item. Here's more and here's even more on the young man.

Regarding the Groves piece:

USU has a senior point guard, a senior post player, a red shirt sophomore and a junior JC transfer in their starting lineup. That is a very experienced group. There isn't a major difference in the talent level between Nevada and USU. USU is athletic, quick and of course well coached. They lost a game against a solid opponent but not a team loaded with superior talent. Nevada recruits WAC caliber players just as USU does.

Though they have had some run together now, Nevada plays 6 sophomores every night. Finn has some back issues . Burton was forced to play the whole game but he normally plays around 30 minutes a game.

Nevada was far from flawless in this game. They were very poor from the free throw line and allowed 71 points and a 50 percent shooting night for the Aggies.

The key was Nevada kept their composure and withstood the runs. They got stops when the game could have turned. To do that against a talented, physically, emotionally and mentally mature team in that environment says a lot about the Pack. It was a very entertaining game and a fabulous showcase for really good basketball players on both teams but it was just one game. It is a long season. It is too early to determine much of anything yet.

I believe that the wac race will come down to USU, or Nevada. Probably Nevada, they look good this year. Don't fall asleep on Stew Morril. He has proven himself as a teacher of the game. Although, he has lost all five staters from last year. His team will play their best by the wac tourney.
So, watch out come tournament time. Utah state will be the hardest out. My prediction is Stew Morril gets his team back to the NCAA tournament. Another first round loss is very likely though.
