Thursday's WAC basketball report

A.W. Prince has a no-subscription needed column posted containing a bevy of Nevada basketball recruiting information.

+++++

Adam Zagoria offered this recently:

Stanford is pursuing 2012 point guard Jordan Chatman extremely hard. Chatman, the son of former BYU standout Jeff Chatman, and current star for Skyview High in Washington has spoken with Cardinal head coach Johnny Dawkins several times this week. On Thursday, Dawkins informed Chatman’s father that he was invited to Stanford elite camp, along with the hopes of hosting the family for an unofficial visit. Chatman visited Utah unofficially on Monday and has seen a number of new schools after him.
Utah State is supposedly also in the running.

The Monday a.m. WAC basketball links

AW Prince saves us from a shutout (pardon the mixed sports metaphor) with a look at a 2012 point who already has an offer from the Wolf Pack, plus a couple more items.

+++++

Actually there is one more item. Marek Warszawski's column in the Fresno Bee yesterday contains an itme about the next Fresno State coach needing to establish a program identity. Maybe so but winning enough will suffice. Former Bulldog mentor Boyd Grant certaining did both as did Tark although the latter made it a trifecta with too much baggage accumulation.

Tuesday and the WAC

AW Prince highlights a Nevada (and another WAC team) recruiting target.

+++++

Sam Wasson's Daily Aggie contains a large basketball component (after the initial three paragraphs. Sam also offer this link in which Sir Troy is examined by a consortium of NBA scouts. Jason Groves provides a blog post on the Shakespearean dilemma facing Coach Marvin Menzies: to sit or not to sit the injured TG in the BracketBuster matchup.

It's a Big Sky week as San Jose State University hosts Montana State tonight prior to its BracketBuster matchup with Weber State on Friday.

The post-holiday WAC report for Tuesday

AW Prince at the Silver and Blue site provides an informative look at the recent off-the-field doings in the WAC -- we loved his lead paragraph. So will it or won't it be "Karl, I'll take the MWC for $5 million"? Go here for the read.

+++++

The Louisiana Tech schedule certainly has an 800-pound gorilla early on as the Aggies travel to Texas on November 10 to tangle with the Longhorns. Go here for the full schedule.

+++++

According to one of Texas' better prospects, an official to Fresno State should be scheduled fairly soon. 6-foot-6 Jalen Jones is fleshing out his five visit allotment and the Bulldogs are in the inner circle. Damon Sayles at the Rivals TexasHoops.com site has the details and a sub is required.

After an April tourney, DFW Basketball News had this description of Jones: "Strong wing prospect with great athletic ability. Scored basketball continously off the dribble. Very good offensive rebounder, played games with a lot of energy and desire."

From the Dallas Showtyme site comes this: "I get bombarded with calls all the time from players/parents/coaches about kids all the time. About 6 months ago Erven “Big E” Davis told me about Jalen Jones from Mansfield Timberview. At the time the 6’5 wing was playing as an undersized post for his high school squad. Jones is the epitome of why grassroots basketball is so important. If a college coach was to watch Jones play in high school, one would assume that his talents were limited to the paint, after last week’s performance at the GASO, and this weekend’s Top 20 All-Star game performance at the Pangos All-American Camp, Jones established himself as a talented wing prospect.

Jones doing his thing out in the LBC didn’t come as a surprise, but the text message we received at 11:17 a.m. local time from Eric Bossi (Rivals.com) quickly confirmed that Jones was taking his game to another level.  “Glenn, who is this Jalen Jones kid!” In the last 24 hours we have field calls from schools in the Big 12, Big East, and Pac-10 wanting to know more about the rising the 2011 standout. Not to bad for a kid that’s “back for the first time”.

Tuesday's WAC report

AW Prince at Silver and Blue Sports offers a piece on a Chicago prepster apparently of interest to Nevada, Jamall Millison, a 2012 prospect.

 +++++

Ferd Lewis says the WAC should be inspired by the late Johnny Cash's song "A Boy Named Sue" -- with all emphasis on the last word.

+++++

Here's a Jack Carey/USA TODAY-penned summary of the state of the WAC.

+++++

Coach Marvin Menzies has added a former southern California prep star -- Tom Lewis -- to his staff as the coordinator of player development. Former Aggie Chris Gabriel played for Lewis at Junipero Serra High.

Here is a 1985 Los Angeles Times column by Chris Dufresne that takes satire to a whole 'nother level.

Another golden oldie can be read here

Mal Florence of the Times has a lengthy piece on Lewis here..

+++++

Andre Almeida is a 7-footer out of the Arizona juco ranks who signed with Nebraska. His connection was Walter Roese, a fellow Brazilian and a Cornhusker assistant at the time, who was later hired at Hawaii by Gib Arnold. Some UH fans were hoping Almeida would follow Roese to the islands but that didn't happen. Almeida would have become a starter in the middle for the Rainbow Warriors but we just saw a note that he his on campus in Lincoln -- so that candle flame can be extinguished. Roese also is credited for the earlier Nebraska signing of center Vander Joaquim, another native of Brazil who had to attend an Arizona juco due to academics, but someone who did sign with UH this year.

Thursday and the WAC

Rivals' Brian Snow is reporting that New Mexico State has offered 6-foot-5 Canadian wing Jonathan Thsimbuy. Snow writes that the Aggies are the only school to do so at this point but expect big changes soon.

+++++

Gotta believe that exhibition summer series in Canada was planned with recruiting north of the border in mind. Jason Groves has two pieces -- here and here -- on the Aggies heading north to play.

+++++

Per Chris Murray, Luke Babbitt has signed with Portland.

It's all AW Prince/Silver and Blue Sports today

AW Prince from the Silver and Blue Sports site offers the feature of the day (and probably the week). It is his second annual ‘10 Impact in the WAC – Hoops Part 1 in which he looks at who has arrived and who has departed from the BSU, Fresno State, Hawaii and Idaho basketball teams and provides his analysis on next season.

Accessing it requires an S-and-B sub but here is yet another good reason to make that commitment.

Sunday and WAC basketball

 AW Prince has compiled video, audio, photos and print-- all in one post -- about the members of Nevada's basketball recruiting class this go-around. Talk about a collective resource! Go here to Silver and Blue Sports and a sub is required

 +++++

Tony Jones has tweeted that another underclassmen -- Quincy Bair -- has cast his lot with Stew Morrill and USU. Here is what Jones wrote about Bair the other day:

Strengths: Hops, hops and more hops. Bair can rise with the best of him and is explosive going to the basket. He's capable of taking his man off the dribble with either hand and finishing above the rim. His upside is considerable. He's a very good mid-range shooter, a long armed defender and great in transition. He's capable of highlight reel plays and drew ooohs and ahhhs from the crowd on a number of occasions. He's someone who can score in a number of ways. He's a good rebounder on both sides of the ball. His quick hands and anticipation generated a number of turnovers. He's another guy who needs national competition because there are few athletes in this state comperable to him. He can hit the occasional three-pointer, but isn't consistent in that regard. His first step is quick and explosive. He projects as a perfect small forward at the college level. He's 6-4 at this point, but says that he could grow to 6-6 by the time he's ready for school. According to Rodney Davis, Marcel's father, the two are best friends, along with Loveridge.
+++++

From Marek Warszawski's Fresno Bee column -- PTW will title this Reason #34705 for why we need a sports apocalypse:
*Takeru Kobayashi might not renew his annual grudge match with Joey Chestnut at today's hot dog-eating contest on Coney Island because of a contract dispute.

Steve LeMaster writes "The Pilot Rocky Top League started its fourth year on June 15 with its competitive field yet. The East Tennessee basketball league features a great mix of talent from top to bottom. Bearden High School in Knoxville will host games on Monday and Wednesday nights through July 1..."

Why do we mention this? Because former Idaho Vandal Kashif Watson is playing on the Choice Spine squad.

Rise and shine for Monday's WAC report

Mychal Ladd is going in another direction and "Mr. Trey" -- 169 of his 285 shot attempts were from long distance last season) will no longer be a Bulldog basketballer:

Ladd leaves 'Dogs men's hoops team
The Fresno Bee
May 23, 2010

Sophomore guard Mike Ladd has left the Fresno State men's basketball team, Bulldogs coach Steve Cleveland announced Sunday.

Ladd started 29 of 32 games at shooting guard for Fresno State last season, averaging 10.3 points while shooting a team-best 39.1% from 3-point range.

No reasons were given for Ladd's departure, but both Cleveland and the player indicated the decision had nothing to do with basketball...
Go here for the remainder.

Carrick Felix of College of Southern Idaho was denied entry into Duke so there is a mad scramble for his services and, of course, the resulting speculation abounds about who will nab the athletic wing. We have never met the young man and have no insight into his priorities but it seems that if he is good enough to play in the ACC and for Duke then other high majors will certainly be investigating into acquiring his talents. His coming to the WAC seems a long shot.

Percy Allen of the Seattle Times, quoting an ESPN article, addresses speculation that Felix may be bound for Seattle.

Thanks to seldomseensmith at BlueAggies.com, we have a look at the 2010 California juco ranks and the number of basketballers moving on to D-1. We would have guessed higher, especially considering the number of schools and likewise the out-of-state players playing on CA squads. Go here.
