Carrick Felix to ASU

As expected, CSI's Carrick Felix has landed in the PAC-10, Arizona State specifically.

Your Brady Heslip and Carrick Felix updates

Per Jeff Goodman (a must-read two or three times a day): "...Former BC guard Brady Heslip, who has visiting and is still considering Utah State and Boise State, told FOXSports.com he may take visits to Baylor, Georgetown and Hofstra prior to making a decision. Heslip is a Canadian who enrolled at BC for the second semester a year ago..." 

Jeff also offered this: "...Schools that are in the mix for Carrick Felix are Michigan St., Butler, UCLA, Arkansas, Kansas State, BC, Arizona St., Villanova and Washington St..."

Wednesday's WAC rumblings

Mike Christensen/Twin Falls Times-News talked with Carrick Felix and offers a lengthy feature. Even with this offering, it remains fuzzy -- at least to PTW -- as to why Felix departed from Duke. That is, other than Kyle Singler. Felix wants to be in the PAC-10 but it's worth noting that Boise State and Hawaii have reached out.

Does Cal transfer D.J. Seeley, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, fit say at Fresno State? The most recent Fresno Bee article contained quotes from Steve Cleveland that indicate not -- if our interpretation is correct:

"...Ladd's departure leaves Fresno State with two open scholarships for 2010-11. Cleveland said he expects to add one player who will contribute immediately and one Division I transfer.

"Our intention is to add a Division I transfer who can address our depth issue as a premier post player," Cleveland said. "We are still currently involved in adding one more player to this year's roster..."

Tuesday and the WAC

To be fair (we try at least), we wrote earlier that Carrick Felix had been academically denied entry at Duke. Other reports have him changing his mind on Durham based upon Kyle Singler returning for his senior season. Anyone have the so-called truth?

Sophomore guard Mike Ladd has left the Fresno State men's basketball team, Bulldogs coach Steve Cleveland announced Sunday.

Ladd started 29 of 32 games at shooting guard for Fresno State last season, averaging 10.3 points while shooting a team-best 39.1% from 3-point range.

No reasons were given for Ladd's departure, but both Cleveland and the player indicated the decision had nothing to do with basketball...

Carrick Felix of College of Southern Idaho was denied entry into Duke so there is a mad scramble for his services and, of course, the resulting speculation abounds about who will nab the athletic wing. We have never met the young man and have no insight into his priorities but it seems that if he is good enough to play in the ACC and for Duke then other high majors will certainly be investigating into acquiring his talents. His coming to the WAC seems a long shot.

Percy Allen of the Seattle Times, quoting an ESPN article, addresses speculation that Felix may be bound for Seattle.

A pair of recruiting notes

Carrick Felix, a wing at College of Southern Idaho, has committed to Duke. He is the first junior college player Coach K has 'signed' if you will. Idaho and many others had offered but this was a done deal when it was first hinted at a couple of months back.

Also, 6-foot-9 senior Arizona prep Jordan Didier, whose name was associated with Fresno State as well as a number of other suitors, is heading to prep school next season.

"After starting out conference play 0-2 the Utah State Aggies have stormed their way to the top of the conference. The Aggies are winners of ten straight and at 10-2, have a game and a half lead over second place New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech. The bottom of the league is starting to clear itself up as well as Idaho has gotten warm at the right time to move into seventh place. Boise State and Hawai’i are battling for the final conference tournament spot.

This weekend the WAC steps out of conference as they take on their BracketBusters foes highlighted by 20-6 Utah State hosting 20-6 Wichita State, 15-9 New Mexico State traveling to 16-8 Pacific, 20-5 Louisiana Tech traveling to 17-9 Northeastern and 15-9 Nevada traveling to 17-8 Missouri State. Additionally, Fresno State will face Big West leading UC-Santa Barbara. The rest of the WAC will face members from the middle of the standings in the Big West..."

Jeff Goodman has a feature on Duke's recruitment of Carrick Felix, a freshman wing out of the College of Southern Idaho.

So why do we mention this?

Because New Mexico State and Idaho (as well as others) also appear in the article as suitors. We're sure Marvin Menzies and Don Verlin are holding their respective breath or building their recruiting classes around landing Felix (yeah, right) but it's good to take a shot every so often at a high level talent -- you never know and there's always the possibility of a bounceback.

Carrick Felix, a redshirt freshman at College of Southern Idaho, is getting major attnetion from Duke and a number of other colleges. We just saw a report from Scout's Dave Telep that Idaho has officially offered Felix - a Scout sub required.

With his good start to the season, Nevada's Armon Johnson is getting more and more NBA draft buzz. In the Pack's latest game, Johnson scored 30 points on 13-of-21 shooting and dished out five assists against BYU, playing in front of at least 15 NBA scouts. The game also highlighted some of his weaknesses, notably five turnovers (he's averaging 3.9 per game). Johnson is no doubt raw as a point guard prospect, but he has the size and athleticism NBA teams want...

Anthony Ray at the Rivals Arizona Preps site, has a feature on 6-foot-6 Carrick Felix, a former Grand Canyon state prepster, now at the College of Southern Idaho:

"...Now as a red-shirt freshman for CSI, college coaches are currently knocking down the door for Felix, as he is currently being recruited hard by such programs as Duke, Washington, USC, Nebraska, Utah State, Eastern Kentucky, Long Beach State, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Tulsa, Wyoming and many others.

Felix advised us that he is in no hurry to rush to a college decision, but that he would like to play at the highest level next season in the division-I ranks..."

What this also brings up is the sometimes fine line between being on a high major team and playing some or going with a mid major program and being a starter. It's hard to see this young man at either Duke or Washington -- the same goes for Eastern Kentucky or Northern Arizona.
