The Gael steamroller flattens NMSU 100-68

MORAGA, CA -- Ben Allen had career highs of 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, freshman Matthew Dellavedova added 19 points and Saint Mary's beat New Mexico State 100-68 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Wayne Hunter scored 19 points and Omar Sanham added 12 points and five rebounds for the Gaels, who were playing their first game without Patty Mills, the stellar point guard from Australia who left for the NBA following his sophomore season last year...
Wow! How did New Mexico State go down 41-26 at the half but then have the lead/deficit more than doubled? Are Patty Mills and Diamon Simpson still in Moraga but playing under other names?

A very bright spot: Hamidu Rahman with 22 points and eight boards against foul-plagued Omar Samhan and 6-foot-11 Ben Allen. Both Samhan and Allen fouled out but the latter filled up the stat sheet with an almost triple double of 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Also, Jahmar Young totaled 16 (shooting 6-16 overall, 0-4 on threes), Jonathan Gibson 14. The Aggies shot 17.6% as a team from three-point range, plus managed just six assists out of 68 points.

NMSU was out-rebounded 41-29 and allowed the Gaels to make 52% of their overall shots, 46% on threes.

This certainly wasn't what any Aggie fan expected but missing Wendell McKines and Troy Gillenwater until December certainly played a factor.
