Fresno gets by Pacific

Didn't think we would ever write this in 2008: Dwight O'Neill has an off-night and the Bulldogs still come away with a road win.

Two other notes: Freshmen Paul George and Mychal Ladd performed very well last night, something Steve Cleveland needs from them -- production from both in the same game. Plus, freshman point Bryce Cartwight didn't light up the scoreboard but had seven assists versus three turnovers and his 32 minutes of playing time both minimizes O'Neill's time at the point and maximizes what O'Neill does best -- playing in the off-guard role. Do watch how this progresses.

We are also a little surprised that the Bee didn't have the Fresno athletics beat reporter cover the game.

Fresno State point guard Dwight O'Neil was having one of those off nights Saturday against University of the Pacific.

But the senior out of Washington High made up for it in the closing seconds, scoring on a power drive with .9 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 66-64 nonconference victory at the Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton.

That snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-4 heading into a four-game homestand starting Wednesday against Cal State-Bakersfield.

Freshman guard Paul George led Fresno State with 23 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Mychal Ladd, another freshman, had 19 points and nine rebounds. And junior forward Sylvester Seay added eight points...

Go here for the remainder.

Don't be surprised by the lack of Bee coverage, Kevin, though shockingly poor it may have been for a game held a stone's throw up Highway 99. I envy the comparative level of coverage provided to fans by the papers in Reno and Las Cruces. We're used to our sorry rag here in ole Fresberg.

Wish you would comment on the Dogs' incoming recruiting class, including scout.com 4* center Greg Smith. (His numbers are off the charts right now through four games at Westwind Academy in Phoenix, but the most eye-popping is 7.5 bpg.) Together with George and Ladd, this program is going to be very, very competitive in '10-'11, if not the year prior.
