For a couple of months this men's basketball season the University of Hawai'i and Boise State were engaged in a desperate battle to escape the ignominious cellar and squeeze into the eighth and last berth in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Now, while the season is over for both of them, the competition might only be heating up.

With the Broncos' Friday firing of Greg Graham (yes, a 19-point victory over UH this month and a WAC Tournament berth still weren't enough to save his job after a 15-17 finish) they could find their candidate pools overlapping and interests colliding...

Our question: is Boise going to pony up the necessary dollars to make a splash in the national media? That might not be necessary if the new hire starts out winning 20+ games and then does so on a consistent basis but, like Lewis writes, BSU is attempting to position its football and mens basketball programs as 'much haves' come the apparently soon-to-be conference realignments. A big nameas basketball coach isn't a guarantee for inclusion elsewhere -- or even winning for that matter -- but the initial publicity just such a hire would generate is loaves-and-fishes to any ADs wishing to broaden the awareness and knowledge of their brands.
