Calling for nominations

So who are the leaders on each WAC team?

We keep reading more and more that this team 'lacks a leader' or that 'so-and-so needs to step up and lead' so we want your takes on who you see as the leader of your team and also what you expect a leader to do both on and off the court.

Our sense is it doesn't necessarily have to be a team's leading scorer, that it could be the one who makes his teammates better by example and demonstration. Plus, the one whose teammates look to for both verbal and non-verbal commanding, especially at tough points in a game and/or near the end of a contest?

The sentiment is out there that Utah State is missing Gary Wilkinson for more than his numbers. If so, what else did he bring to the court?

So who is your squad's influenc-er, so to speak?

I think this is actually one of the biggest problems with Fresno State right now. The team captains are both reserves in Ned Golubovic and Brandon Sperling. When you've got talent like Greg Smith, Paul George and Sylvester Seay, you can't afford to not have one of those guys leading the group.

You know my thoughts on the situation down in Las Cruces. If Wendell doesn't lead, no one will. And that includes their coach. Clearly, he has made a difference outside of just his production, and his leadership will probably become more important as they hit the road in the WAC.

Hope you had a good holiday and you are enjoying the New Year, Kevin!

At Louisiana Tech, there's a lot to be said about the steady leadership of senior guard Kyle Gibson, who is going down as one of the top 5-10 players in the school's history. Then, there's the steady improvement of forwards Magnum Rolle and Olu Ashalou, who are both in their second seasons on the floor (after redshirting their first years on campus).

However, the reason Louisiana Tech has improved so much is simply because of the presence of JUCO transfer point guard DeAndre Brown. Kerry Rupp finally has a point guard to run his offense, which he didn't have during his first two years at the helm (he didn't have one his first year while Jamel White was sitting out as a transfer, and then White was dismissed before last season, which really hampered Tech last year).

Brown is a small (5-11) but super quick guard who excels in three areas -- getting into the lane for a pullup jumper, penetrating deep and dishing, and finishing at the rim. Brown has tremendous vision, and his arrival is the reason for Rolle and Ashalou becoming much more involved in the offense. They finally have somebody to get them the basketball.
