Is there a Pooh Corner in Logan?

Attempting to answer the question posed by the headline, there may or may not be one now but there certainly should be by the time Pooh Williams is a senior as very, very few underclassmen take to the role of being known first and foremost as a defender.

If you want to play for Aggie head men’s basketball coach Stew Morrill, you better buy into playing defense and work on rebounding.

Those are two areas the veteran coach focuses a lot of his attention on. As the cliche goes, defense wins championships.

Utah State sophomore Pooh Williams has bought into playing defense. In fact, that is why he has become a regular starter this season — starting 20 of 24 contests.

“His bread and butter, the thing that keeps him in the lineup and coach Morrill impressed, is his defense,” Aggie associate coach Tim Duryea said. “He is a very good on-the-ball defender.”

Of course there are areas to get better at, like team defense and weak-side defending, as well as getting a few more rebounds. But his on-ball defense is second to none.

“He is one of the best in the league, he can really defend on the ball,” Duryea said. “That gives you comfort as a coach, because there are a lot of good wing scorers in this league. We know we can assign Pooh to that guy and he is just not going to wear out. That helps your defense a lot. Our perimeter defense has been pretty solid...”
