Is this a great country or what?

America is indeed the land of opportunity. Logan, Utah especially. The Utah State athletics department specifically. Where else could Joe or Josephina Fan schedule a game -- actually make that two -- for your college basketball team?

Now if you are up to the challenge -- telemarketing skills are a prerequisite and the ability to hear no, no, no, no, no, no, no ad infinitum or simply be laughed at unmercifully without eventually requiring psychological counseling -- are a must.

Shawn Harrison has the details:

Give scheduling a try

So, you want to tell the Aggies how to schedule better when it comes to men’s basketball.

Well, here’s your chance, sort of. The Utah State coaching staff is willing to let you help arrange a game for them. The Aggies will even go on the road next season. There is a catch, however. USU wants that team to come back to Logan some time in the future.

That shouldn’t be that hard, right? I mean, it’s only fair. The Aggies go play an opponent on its home court in front of hostile fans and then that school must come to the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.

You better start working the phones right now, because it could take a while. All you need to do is talk to Aggie associate coach Tim Duryea, who has been doing just that for two months now. And there are no takers.

“You’ve heard me say many times I get tired of the scheduling conversation,” USU head coach Stew Morrill said Tuesday during a press conference. “You should hear all the no’s (Duryea) has got the last couple of months, and we are willing to play at their place.”

Duryea is in charge of calling and trying to fill out the USU schedule. He explained how there are several Web sites teams use to find opponents to fill specific needs, like certain dates, and road and home games.

There are 44 schools Duryea has been trying to call. If someone happens to answer, there isn’t much discussion. Then there are the schools that won’t even return a message left by Duryea...

Go here for the remainder.

If they flop in the WAC tourney this year his complaint will ring hollow with Aggie fans. Take some 2 for 1s and 1 for none games you big sissy. Of course the schools all laugh when he insists on 1 and 1s. Even Gonzaga often has to play an away and a semi-away to get good home games. And USU is no Gonzaga.

The proof of what Stew is talking about is the fact that Jim Boylen told media that he was told not to schedule the Aggies at the spectrum. There are few teams willing to play a home and home series with the Aggies it makes me disgusted. They are all a bunch of pansies like Dave Rose. Coaches need to act like the men they are and not take advantage of smaller programs.

Anonymous,
Nobody in the WAC is getting home and home prime matchups. We all take 2 for 1s (Nevada vs Cal, Kansas, North Carolina) or 1 for none (Nevada vs UCLA, UCONN). I'm not saying Stew is lying. I'm saying everyone is laughing since Stew thinks he's got the only D1 mid major program in the country that doesn't have to accept 2 for 1s and 1 and dones.
