For the nine teams of the Western Athletic Conference, the grind is nearly over — which means the stakes for each and every game are doubled.

Tonight’s games mark the beginning of the end, the final weekend of conference regular-season play. One week from today, the WAC’s best eight will do battle in Reno, Nev. to determine who will earn the tournament crown — and with it, the conference’s ticket to the Big Dance. The fight for conference position is far more than academic, as a better seed and a more favorable opponent can spell the difference between being one-and-done and making a finals run.

The first and last seeds are already known — Utah State and Fresno State, respectively. But in the midpack muddle that has persisted all season long, much remains to be decided. Every other position is up for grabs.

#1 Utah State (13-2)
#2 Nevada (9-5)
#3 Boise State (8-6)
#4 New Mexico State (8-7)
#5 Idaho (7-7)
#6 San Jose State (6-8)
#7 Louisiana Tech (6-9)
#8 Hawaii (5-10)
#9 Fresno State (3-11)

Today’s penultimate games will go a long way toward sorting that mess out. For starters, Nevada can lock up the 2-seed by beating San Jose State, while a Louisiana Tech victory sends Hawaii into the play-in game with the 8-seed...
