When Western Athletic Conference coaches picked the New Mexico State men's basketball team third prior to the season, Aggies fans were primed for a return to the NCAA Tournament, 20-plus wins and a WAC title.

Things haven't panned out quite that way as the NMSU fanbase has had to watch an up-and-down season with a group of young, talented players trying to find their way on the floor.

The end result was a 16-14 regular season and a No. 5 seed for the WAC Tournament, which opens today in Reno, Nev. The Aggies face No. 4 Boise State in the early quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Thursday, on ESPNU.

"I think everybody was optimistic in the beginning of the year, because that's how fans are and I'm the same way as any fan," said head coach Marvin Menzies, who completed his second season as a Division I head coach. "You want the dream of that great year and season of shocking the world, but the reality is that those types of seasons are few and far apart. What we are trying to do here is put something in front of Las Cruces fans every night that is a consistent NCAA competitor year in and year, out and I think we took a step forward toward that this year..."
