Matt James checks in on Fresno State hoops

Matt James is a columnist for the Fresno Bee so don't expect the following to be any sort of hum-drum, who-what-when-where-and sometimes but not often enough why reportage.

I've got one more Tour of California blog in me, but first a few things about last Saturday's Fresno State basketball game. First of all, Fresno State lost. I can't remember the score. It doesn't matter. The Bulldogs lost to the IDAHO VANDALS. Yes, it's an improving team, but still. It's the Idaho Vandals. You shouldn't lose to Idaho. In anything. You shouldn't lose to Idaho in a game of Whose Mascot Most Rhymes With "Scandals."

But the Bulldogs did. In men's basketball, not the rhyming thing. They missed a whole bunch of free throws, including all four by their freshman point guard Bryce Cartwright*. And two of Cartwright's misses were in the final minute, with the Bulldogs down just four. The point guard position has been a problem all year (Cartwright is shooting 37% from the field and 26% on 3-pointers; and the other option, senior Dwight O'Neil, was suspended twice and did a wee bit of jail time this season) and it is looking more and more like Coach Steve Cleveland will have to start fresh at point guard next year...

Go here for the remainder.
